This tour runs a route around the northeast and fairly isolated areas on the last two days. Get your feet wet in Vang Vieng and stop in to figure out what the Plain of Jars is all about. The highlight of the trip is the last day ride on a graded dirt road into Luang Prabang over Rock star Highway!

Day 1: Vientiane – Vang Vieng 190 km paved
Day 2: Vang Vieng – Phonsavan 240 km paved
Day 3: Phonsavan – Vieng Thong 210 km paved
Day 4: Vieng Thong - Luang Prabang 130 km paved/90 dirt

Day to day itinerary:
Vientiane arrival
Depending on your flight arrival, transfer to the hotel. In the evening, meet the guide and go over the upcoming trip. We’ll talk about safety and the ride as well as set you up with additional gear for the following day

Day 1: Vientiane – Vang Vieng/ 190 km paved, 40 dirt
Breakfast at the hotel and depart up road # 10 out of Vientiane. We’ll ride for a while and take a few stops here and there so you can get some ride photos taken. We break for a quick snack at Nam Ngum Reservoir at a scenic overlook. We ride to meet road # 13 and continue into Vang Vieng. Upon arrival and check into the hotel, drop a little gear and we are off on a 40 km dirt ride to the west of Vang Vieng. Dinner tonight is at the hotel, riverside.

Day 2: Vang Vieng to Phonsavan 250 km paved
Breakfast early at 07:00 and we are rolling north. We start to really climb about 60 km out of Vang Vieng and take an early lunch in Phou Khoun. Turning east, we twist along the mountain roads and make our way to a small Buddha Cave about 50 km from Phonsavan. We ride on and check out site 1 Plain of Jars just outside of town. After our walk, we get to the hotel, freshen up and then to the local Mine Advisory Group office for a 55 minute movie on the left over bombs from the Vietnam War in Laos. Dinner locally tonight and sleep well.

Day 3: Phonsavan – Vieng Thong 210 km paved
Breakfast at the hotel and we ride east to grab a mountain road headed north. We’ll climb even higher and hopefully the fog will be burned off revealing great views along the way. Small, remote villages dot the landscape and we’ll stop as you like. Lunch today is in a small valley village and we then reach the main rural highway to Vieng Thong. The scenery is great along the ride and we’re in Tiger Country. Upon arrival in Vieng Thong, we stop in the WCS, Wildlife Conservation Services for a look at the conservation efforts in the protected area. Vieng Thong is quite small and we’ll eat at a local restaurant and enjoy an early evening.

Day 4: Vieng Thong – Luang Prabang 130 km paved, 90 dirt road
A local breakfast and we are riding a rural road to meet a short cut to Luang Prabang. We turn on the dirt road and ride what Remote Asia calls “Rockstar Highway” The road is in good condition but the kids along the way are fantastic – cheering as we ride by! We descend and ride along a meandering river to the main road 13 and turn into Luang Prabang. Once in town, check into the hotel and enjoy our last night together.
