5 Day Western Loop of Northwest Laos

Similar to our 4 day Western Loop, we’ve added a day on this one to give you a taste of Xayaboury and a free afternoon in Luang Prabang.  There are a few side track options on this tour and with the added day, allows a little more flexibility on the ride to get off the road here and there.  Come on, what are you waiting for?  Need a little visual?  We've embedded a former tour video at the base of the page, click on the icon to the right for a view!

Vientiane Arrival

Day 1 Vientiane – Xaynamkhan
Day 2 Xaynamkhan - Xayaboury,   

Day 3 Xayaboury –Luang Prabang  

Day 4 Luang Prabang   – Vang Vieng

Day 5 Vang Vieng – Vientiane

Day to day itinerary:

Arrival day

Upon your arrival, transfer from the airport to the hotel and in the evening, meet your guide and get a

pre-trip briefing.

Day 1 Vientiane – Xaynamkhan 150 - 190 km dirt plus side diversions

After breakfast at the hotel, we begin with an orientation to the bikes and a pre-trip safety briefing on Lao

driving.   We ride out of town and

along the Mekong River.  The road is not paved after the 10 km and will be dusty with some challenging sections.  We have lunch in the middle of nowhere and then continue on to Xayanmkhan for a late lunch.  Arrival in Xaynamkhan will be around 16:00.

Day 2 Xaynamkhan – Xayaboury (225 km dirt road – 200 km dirt road/small track)

Breakfast andwe depart at 08:00.  There are several options on this ride day and based on the riding ability from the previous day.  The ride will be in remote areas of Laos and we will get somewhat deep into the countryside.  Road conditions will be dusty and in some cases, river crossings depending on the water table.

Day 3 Xayaboury – Luang Prabang (88 km dirt road, 25 km paved road 

Departure after breakfast and a relatively short ride into Luang Prabang.  Our estimated arrival time is 13:30 and the road is all dirt except for the last 20 mile into Luang Prabang.  An optional ride north slightly for those that don’t wish to see the city. Dinner tonight is up to you.  There are many massage options in Luang Prabang and those riders that purchase items too large for transport on the bikes can have them sent to Vientiane with our partner agent in Luang Prabang.

Day 4 Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng (230 km main road)

Breakfast at the hotel and depart by 08:30.  The road will be cool and wet with early morning fog so the first 50 KM are slow going.  We are up and down changing elevation many times and the scenery is excellent.  We ride all paved roads today and a few stops in small villages or schools (if in session).  Lunch in Phou Khoun and we’ll arrive late afternoon and take a short ride to the west of town unless the group decides to stay riverside (beers).

Day 5 Vang Vieng – Vientiane (180 km paved, 30 km dirt – 180 km paved, 85 km dirt)

Our last breakfast is riverside and we are on the road at 08:00.  The arrival back in Vientiane is at 14:00.  A main road diversion via some more rural areas north of Vientiane will bring us back to the first hotel for bag collection and shower before departure. The arrival time is flexible depending on your outbound flight schedules.
